Music at the Three Churches

The Mahone Bay Summer Concerts Society presents Music at the Three Churches, a series of summer evening concerts performed by outstanding musicians in the extraordinarily beautiful environment of Mahone Bay. Classical music in a classical setting.

Music at the Three Churches began in 1996 through the inspiration and devoted effort of Dr. John Sandison. The aim of the society is to offer a variety of classical music--instrumental and vocal, solo and choral, ensemble and orchestral--which will appeal to a broad range of tastes and present performances of the highest quality. The series maintains its original mandate of supporting regional artists and young performers, although its reputation has grown to the extent that it attracts distinguished musicians from elsewhere in Canada and abroad.

The society's artistic advisor is Shimon Walt, noted musician, teacher and Assistant Principal Cellist with Symphony Nova Scotia, whose capable guidance and dedication from its inception continue to guarantee our audiences memorable evenings of first-class performers and popular repertoires.

The programmes are designed to offer an attractive range within the classical repertoire for the enjoyment of music lovers among South Shore residents and visitors in the region, enhanced both by the charm and history of the famous three churches which serve as the traditional venue for the series, and by the warmth and hospitality of the community which, of itself, has become a legend amoung audiences and performers alike.

Each year has seen a rise in the popularity of the series, both within the community and among the distinguished artists who are invited to perform.

There are four or five concerts during the season on Friday evenings during July, August and September. All concerts are presented in Mahone Bay's three historic churches.

Refreshments are served during intermission, outside on the lawn when weather permits; or one may stroll by the water's edge in the quiet of the gathering dusk.

The Society is administered by a Board of Directors and assisted by an artistic advisor. The Board meets several times a year. The Chairman and Directors, as well as managing the business and finances of the organization, volunteer many hours to the success of the concerts.
